When we say someone has “gone batty” or, in other words, gone crazy, we’re referring to an old phrase that describes the crazy behavior of frightened bats.

According to the book “Common Phrases and Where They Come From” by Myron Korach (The Lyons Press, $9.95), here’s the real deal: In the 16th Century, English physicians would often send mentally ill patients to the city of Bath to bathe in its restorative mineral springs. It became common for patients to “go to Bath,” which became “gone Bathey,” which was often pronounced “batty.”
