This year’s was one of the most enjoyable Halloween evenings I have experienced in quite a long time. For one thing, we didn’t have contingents of older kids. In previous years, youths in their late teens arrived with little or no costumes demanding candy. The few older teens (15-, 16- and 17-year-olds) who did knock on our door all had costumes and pretty good make-up.
Also it was really neat and refreshing to see the number of parents chaperoning their kids, taking an active part in the evening’s activities.
Last and most important: The major reason that this was a pleasant experience is that each and every child said “Thank you” and “Happy Halloween.” Let me repeat that: Without exception, each and every child said “Thank you” and “Happy Halloween.” It’s fun to talk with and to give treats to polite kids with good manners.
To the parents of these well-mannered kids: Congratulations! You’re doing a great job of teaching your children. Keep it up. Your kids are going to have a bright future. It’s refreshing to see that old values of being polite and good manners are not lost.
