Conservatives who used to spit out the phrase “card-carrying member of the ACLU” like the worst of insults are now joining their ranks.
Since the Sept. 11 attacks, membership in the American Civil Liberties Union increased by 50,000 people to 330,000 dues-paying members, reports the 82-year-old organization.
At one time, conservatives considered the ACLU a meddlesome group of liberals pushing unpopular views.
ACLU officials say that Americans are now recognizing the ACLU is patriotic.
