We need to remember that what makes speech free is civility. When we shout at each other with inflammatory words and gestures, it provokes a natural and aggressive reaction. Over time, only inflammatory dialog gets attention and action, not calm and civil reason.
Our speech isn’t free because the Constitution says it is. It’s free because we agree to trust each other not to use our free speech to coerce or inflame, and to take responsibility for our own actions.
