Peter Thomas McGarry, Winnetka, formerly of Chicago, came into this world on September 6, 1962 and touched many lives before leaving us on January 4, 2003. As he battled cancer with inspirational humor and strength, his widely distributed e-mail updates not only gave comfort, but also brought laughter to his family and many friends. A graduate of Kenyon College, he worked in the school’s Admissions office for two years before joining the advertising firm of Ogilvy & Mather. In addition, he was a communications specialist with Andersen Consulting in Chicago and, most recently, a freelance writer. Left to celebrate his life are his parents, Anne, of Winnetka and Kevin of Lexington, Kentucky; his sisters, Elizabeth and Anne, his brothers, John (Heidi) and Kevin; his nieces, Jaime, Anne and Eloise and nephew, Thomas; many aunts, uncles and cousins (including Mara, who named her newborn Peter); as well as many devoted friends from throughout his life who supported Peter during his two year battle with melanoma. A memorial service will be at 5:00 p.m. on January 8, 2003, at Sts. Faith, Hope & Charity, 191 Linden Street, Winnetka. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Illinois, 640 North LaSalle, Ste. 280, Chicago 60610 and Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of the North Shore, 2821 Central Street, Evanston, IL 60201.
