When Lili Ann Zisook was young, her family vacationed in Miami Beach. She remembers visiting Lincoln Road, now the Art Deco Historic District, and being awed by the architecture and colors. When husband Richard, a real estate builder/developer, was growing up, he too traveled to Miami Beach where his grandfather owned an apartment hotel. Working with interior designer Laurie Cowall, the Zisooks created a room in the mid-1980s dedicated to the Miami Beach of their childhood. Visions of hotels like the Delano and the Saxony sparked this whimsical throwback to the 1950s. Affectionately called “the pink room,” the space is predominantly “bubble-gum pink” with turquoise, black and white accents. Reproduction Deco furnishings were chosen for their highly embellished lines. Collections of memorabilia including Deco frames and 1950s model cars are displayed on pink Formica built-ins. Cowall designed the vinyl floor, picking up the black and white checks from the bottom of a vase and the border of the nearby pool. “We use the room as an offshoot of the pool,” notes Lili Ann, an events consultant. “Everything in the room can be wet. And the couch is a sofa bed for guests.”
