General Electric Co., the world’s biggest maker of electric diesel engines for trains, will begin sales next year of locomotives that meet U.S. environmental standards two years earlier than required. The Evolution Series of diesel locomotives cost more than $200 million to develop over six years and reduces emissions by 40 percent, GE says. They will sell for $1.8 million to $2.5 million, or at least 10 percent more than current models. But GE Transportation doesn’t expect significant orders until Environmental Protection Agency guidelines take effect in 2005.
