Those aren’t the same Detroit Red Wings who won the Stanley Cup last summer, the Blackhawks seemed to be telling the 21,295 fans who came to the United Center to see them pay their first visit this season.
For 59 minutes, the Hawks were dropping hints that they have what it takes to beat the Stanley Cup champions.
But Hawk fans should have entered the Hull factor into the equation.
Brett Hull tied the score with his second deflection goal of the game with 37 seconds remaining in regulation time and then passed the puck to Jason Woolley, enabling the defenseman to score the goal 71 seconds into overtime that gave the Red Wings a 4-3 victory.
The Hawks were unable to hold off a team that was minus $14,419,506 in captain Steve Yzerman and defenseman Chris Chelios.
“The major base of this team has won three Stanley Cups in six years. There’s not much they believe they can’t do,” Hull said.
