Ever catch yourself daydreaming during the slow trek to work about going up and over the crowds in your own flying machine? Now’s your chance to buy one, but you’ll have to shell out some big bucks and resist the urge to take it for a spin.

Designers of a strap-on personal aircraft that they hope might one day transport soldiers over land mines or zip commuters to work are auctioning the prototype on eBay to raise money for research. Bidding started at $50,000 and as of Sunday night was hovering around $5 million.

There is one hitch for the top bidder, though. The winner must agree not to fly the SoloTrek XFV, which its maker says can hover for more than two hours at a time.

The company doesn’t want to get sued if someone gets hurt, said Michael Moshier, chief executive of Trek Aerospace.
