Alex Jacobs, 82, of Aurora, a former Marine and retired welder, whose efforts in battling a terminal cancer served as an inspiration to family members, died Thursday, Jan. 9, in his home. A healthy and active man for most of his life, Mr. Jacobs fought to overcome lung cancer for the last four years, while maintaining his optimism and strong spirit. “He just never complained,” said his daughter Sharon. “He did what the nurses and doctors told him to do, because of his steadfast belief that he could beat the disease.” Family members said that persistent spirit and strong will was exhibited throughout numerous chemotherapy and other treatments. “We were very proud of him and the message of strength he passed along to us,” his daughter said. The son of Hungarian immigrants, Mr. Jacobs married Helen Kelleher in 1942 and the couple were married for 56 years, until her death in 1998. He served with the Marine Corps during World War II. “It was a period in his life that he was very proud of,” said his daughter. “He often said being a Marine made him stronger and helped him see life in a different light.” A self-taught carpenter, Mr. Jacobs built an addition to his sister’s home, and later built a home for his family in Aurora. He was employed as a welder for 35 years by Stephens-Adamson Mfg. in Aurora, and later worked as a welder for several years at HLM Co. in Naperville. He also was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Aurora, the Aurora Moose Lodge, the Aurora Turners and the VFW. Other survivors include two daughters, Diana and Patricia, and a brother, Daniel. Services have been held.
