HOMEWOOD — Unbelievably, Mark S. in his letter of Jan. 8 proposes to take away the rights of free expression and free exercise of religion for those of us who believe homosexual conduct to be immoral.

According to him, our views shouldn’t be printed in the Tribune since we are “Neo-Nazis” and “fearful haters.” He claims the clear biblical prohibitions against what it terms the “abominable” practice of homosexuality need to be explained away since the Bible was written in a different time and context.

The fact is that when St. Paul wrote so strongly against homosexuality in the New Testament it was about as prevalent and accepted as it is in Western society today. It was certainly accepted by the Greeks and Romans.

The Bible is quite clear on the immorality of this behavior as are the vast majority of Christian denominations today. When God says no to a behavior, He is really saying, “Don’t hurt yourself.”

The average lifespan of a homosexual male is 46 years, shorter than it is for chainsmokers. Aside from AIDS, there are many other sexual diseases gays are prone to at a much higher rate than the average population.

Maybe God knew what He was talking about.

More to marriage than sex

PARK RIDGE — I thought the article titled “Males weigh in on the sexless marriage issue,” in Tales From the Front, by Cheryl Lavin (Tempo, Jan. 8), had some very ignorant comments in it.

First off, what is wrong with being married and not having sex?

I think this article unfortunately brought up a lot of important societal issues such as degradation of women. Men who think they married for the sole purpose of having sex are ignorant, and it looks like “Hank,” “George,” “Sam” and “Ronnie” will never learn the real meaning of life and what is means to be married.

Being married involves a lifetime commitment of love, sharing, friendship with sex coming in the foreground. Sure, sex is a biological need for the human race, but there are other aspects of a marriage that the couple should explore.
