By late this year, another housing project is scheduled to be under way in downtown Naperville, adding 49 new units of rental housing designed for senior citizens.
The site in the 100 block of South Main Street, which houses Tasty Bakery, Elgin Clock Repair and California Closets, will be transformed into a new four-story complex. The building will include a restaurant, meeting and activity space for residents and retail stores at ground level. An outdoor parking lot for 25 vehicles will be behind the building.
The project is being developed by Moser Enterprises of Naperville, along with Dolan and Murphy, and HPD Cambridge.
“HPD Cambridge has designed and developed 200 of these kinds of senior facilities over the past 20 years,” said Art Zwemke, president and chief executive officer of Moser Enterprises. “Small-scale senior apartment developments are well-received when they’re located in a downtown area.”
The Main Street location is near many businesses, Nichols Library, Riverwalk and Naperville Park District events and facilities.
The concept allows independent living for senior citizens, along with scheduled activities and a shuttle bus for transportation. A restaurant on the ground floor will be open to the public and accessible to the residents through hallway. All apartments will contain full kitchens.
“Folks in an institutional setting can get tired of the same food and the same folks at their table every day,” Zwemke said. The project would attract tenants from surrounding areas, Zwemke added.
