NASCAR put tracks on notice Tuesday that the 2004 Winston Cup schedule could look a lot different under a realignment plan that may move races to different parts of the country.

“We cannot expand within the current schedule” said George Pyne, a NASCAR vice president.

Tracks that have two race dates could lose one, NASCAR Chairman Bill France said. He targeted Rockingham, N.C., and Darlington, S.C., owned by the France family’s International Speedway Corp. He said those tracks could lose a date to other ISC facilities, such as Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet; Fontana, Calif.; or Kansas City, Mo.

France also listed Atlanta Motor Speedway and Lowe’s Motor Speedway as tracks that might lose a race.
