While I generally agree with Steve Chapman’s “Ryne Sandberg and the offensive bias against defense” (Commentary, Jan. 12), I also find it ironic that the importance of defense in baseball is voiced seldom by typical Cubs fans. Most Cubs fans seem to prefer a team of power hitters to one laden with defense, pitching and speed. It might make for boring baseball (at least to them), but if they really want to have a winner, that’s the kind of team the Cubs need.
