I have long been a faithful supporter of United Airlines and believe its health and that of O’Hare International Airport are vital to the metro Chicago economy. But after a recent experience, I am beginning to doubt that United will survive.

Last week we flew to New York City. It was mighty tough to make reservations and absolutely impossible to make changes. I got in touch with real people in reservations only two times out of almost 50 calls. The rest of the time, extensions were busy or I got this message: “We are unable to assist you at this time. Please call again later.” Only later didn’t work either. I tried for three days straight.

Unless you can do all your business online or in one of the few overcrowded ticket offices still open, or through a travel agent (who also will have trouble getting through via voice or Net), you will not find it possible to fly United.

I know the company has had to make cutbacks, but I would think sales would be the last place to make cuts.
