While reading your article about obese kids in the Tribune, I was struck dumb by Amanda Nanor’s complaint now that she has had gastric bypass surgery: She has to take vitamins and watch what she eats every day for the rest of her life (“New hope for obese kids comes with worries too; Surgical therapy warily offered,” News, Jan. 12). While I admire her for taking steps to correct her obesity, perhaps a bit of perspective is needed. Everyone should be taking a multivitamin and watching what he or she eats, every day.

As a lifelong Type 1 diabetic who has been taking insulin injections all my life, I find it offensive that people complain about taking vitamins and eating right to make themselves more healthy. I have never been given the choice to not take medication. If I don’t take insulin, I die. I also take 10 pills a day for all the problems I have related to my diabetes.

Do I like to take these pills? No, but I do what I need to do to feel healthy and stay alive.

As Nanor continues to lose weight, she will see that taking a few pills a day and eating vegetables will be a small price to pay for how good she feels.
