Welcome back Mike Downey to the Wake of the News. While I relate to the nostalgia and “Chicago guy” stories, those days have no relevance to the 21st Century sports scene. Contracts worth $25 million and $50,000 SUVs to high school players have alienated fans from the major-league sports scene, leading many Chicago-area fans to enjoy minor-league games.

Leave the historical columns to Richard Rothschild. Keep Mike Downey on the column in the “Wake” of Bernie Lincicome and Bob Verdi and he’ll be fine.
