George W. is having quite a love affair with the SUV (“Great SUV Debate,” Jan. 16). First, he proposed a wimpy increase in the SUV fuel-efficiency standards of only 1.5 miles per gallon. Now he is proposing tax write-offs of up to $75,000 for SUV purchases by small businesses, encouraging further SUV saturation of the roads. His SUV policies are harming our environment while maintaining our dangerous dependence on foreign oil. It’s high time that Mr. Bush’s lips are surgically removed from SUV manufacturers’ bottoms.
