Hermann Maier, who nearly lost a leg in a motorcycle accident 18 months ago, captured a World Cup super-giant slalom Monday in Kitzbuehel, Austria.

“I’m over the moon,” he said. “I am totally moved.”

Maier, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time overall World Cup champion, led an Austrian sweep of the top five places, beating Christoph Gruber by 0.11 seconds.

Stephan Eberharter, the reigning World Cup overall, downhill and super-G champion, was third and regained the overall lead from Bode Miller of the United States, who shared 12th place.

Monday’s victory was the 42nd for Maier, who was injured in August 2001 and returned two weeks ago.
