Prefab is in. But it’s not just furniture anymore. Ready-made homes are hip too.

Magazines such as ReadyMade and shows like “Trading Spaces” have encouraged people to turn their spaces and places from bland to chic. Because of the new lower-priced variety of designs offered in prefab–assembly-required furniture–you can outfit your place with style as long as you’re willing to put in some sweat time. Featured in hip urban stores like Ikea, CB2 and Target, prefab furniture is one way to give your place a face-lift without emptying your wallet.

But why not apply the prefab concept to housing? Our friends across the pond are doing just that. Ikea partnered with Swedish company Skanska to create BoKlock–prefab homes furnished with Ikea furniture. In London, prefab fans can check out the ultramodern Murray Grove, one of the first prefab housing complexes. And designer Michael Graves is working on a prefab home for Target.
