So you want to start a new exercise routine? Great, but before you hit the ground running–or biking–consider these tips to get started on the right foot.
Running
– Make sure you’re wearing the right shoes. The best way to find the shoe for you is to go to a specialty running store, where the staff can find a shoe that will best support your foot.
– For women, a good sports bra is crucial. The fit of the band that goes across the rib cage and underneath the breasts is the most important measure of support. You’ll want the band to be as snug around your ribs as you can stand, but not restrictive to breathing.
– When you’re running, run against traffic.
– Avoid running on sidewalks, which can put a lot of stress on the joints. Run on a track, if possible, or on the street or the grass.
– Save headphones for the gym or track. Wearing them while running may make you more vulnerable to attacks or accidents involving cars.
Biking
– If your bike has been sitting unused in the corner of the garage for the past year, it’s a good idea to take it to a bike shop, where professionals can evaluate it for safety.
– Always bike with traffic or in parks to avoid cars.
– Buy a bike helmet and wear it every time you bike.
– Talk to experts at local bike shops for assistance in setting biking goals.
