Decadent pastries and freshly baked French breads are the signature items of Michel Sendra Bakery & Cafe. In a way, though, a French bakery in Streeterville is itself a signature item.
“All of the ingredients are imported from France,” said general manager Dale Boubekeur, who opened the business with owner Sendra last fall. “I’m from Paris, Michel’s from Nice and it makes for an exotic combination.”
Popular items include 65 percent butter croissants and chocolate croissants ($1.65-$2.05 each); tartlets of apple, lemon, apricot and pear ($3.75 each) and creme brulee ($5.90).
The cafe, which seats 40, offers a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The lunch menu includes the Ooh-lala sandwich (smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber and dill in a multi-grain baguette, $6.25); dinner includes entrees such as chicken en croute, chicken breast wrapped in pastry with mushroom puree on French beans in a red wine sauce ($17). Packaged items also are sold, including preserves, olive oils and pastas from Cuisine de Campagne of Provence.
