Candidate for trustee James “Jim” Devitt was kicked off the Lombard ballot for the April 1 election because the election board found his nominating petition was incorrectly fastened together when submitted.

Devitt, who wanted to run against incumbent Steven Sebby, said he had submitted the 11-page petition bound with a paper clip. But Barb Johnson, deputy village clerk, testified that there was no paper clip.

Even if the pages had been held together with a paper clip, it wouldn’t have been considered securely fastened, as required by state election laws, the board found.

Devitt has pledged to mount a write-in campaign.
