President Bush has two problems: an impending war with Iraq and a domestic economy mired in a long recession. He can solve both problems with one move: Stand down from the Iraqi confrontation.

“We changed our mind” may sound silly, but the fiscal savings in avoiding a war and occupation, combined with removing a major source of instability (jitters) from the market, will go a long way toward alleviating both his problems.
