After reading Phil Rogers’ article “Gains of New York” in the Feb. 13 Tribune, it is obvious why baseball needs to incorporate a salary cap like the NFL and the NBA. George Steinbrenner has so much money, he does not have to worry about making a profit on the Yankees. Unlike the White Sox and other teams, he does not have to make a profit or make payroll to survive, and therefore can buy and stockpile the best players available.
The Yankees are really only a hobby for Steinbrenner, like race horses are for some people. A salary cap would prevent this type of inequity and take away an obvious advantage for teams like the Yankees.
