The article on weird laws that stand out was interesting (“Stop that, you scofflaw!” Feb. 5). However, I thought you’d find it interesting that, according to my high school business-law teacher, in New York state it is illegal to smoke cigarettes and chew gum at the same time.
The gum catches toxins from the smoke; in effect the gum becomes harmful even after the cigarette has been finished. Apparently the state would like to protect smokers from themselves.
