Duke got Maryland in its comfort zone and paid back the 13th-ranked Terrapins for its most lopsided loss of the season.
Dahntay Jones scored 21 points and J.J. Redick added 17 as the eighth-ranked Blue Devils ran their winning streak in Cameron Indoor Stadium to 26 straight with a 75-70 victory Wednesday.
Duke (18-4, 8-4) is tied with the defending national champion Terrapins (16-7, 8-4) for second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with four league games left. Wake Forest is 7-3.
Tahj Holden had a career-high 18 points for the Terrapins, who beat Duke 87-72 on Jan. 18.
Dad cries foul
Two Texas Tech players suspended for a game this week believe they were “set up” as punishment for their part in the team’s losses, one of their fathers told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
Red Raiders coach Bob Knight held junior guard Andre Emmett, the Big 12’s leading scorer, and senior forward Nick Valdez out of Monday night’s game at No. 3 Texas after they missed breakfast and the team’s walkthrough that morning.
Valdez’s father, Joe Valdez, told the newspaper that “Andre and Nick believe they were set up, purportedly for their irresponsibility toward the team, more likely their relative responsibility in the team’s losses and resulting disappointment.”
Knight’s spokesman, Randy Farley, said Wednesday the claim was “absolutely the most ridiculous thing” he has seen.
Webber trial on
Despite the death of Michigan booster Ed Martin, the prosecution of former Wolverine Chris Webber will go forward, according to U.S. attorney’s office spokeswoman Gina Balaya.
Martin, who died Friday at 69, was to have been a star witness for federal authorities against Webber, his father and his aunt on charges of obstruction of justice and lying to a federal grand jury.
Stolen season
Stetson senior forward Alexis McMillan, the NCAA Division I steals leader with 3.95 a game, will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury sustained in last Saturday’s game against Central Florida.
