I enjoyed your column in today’s RedEye (“Excuse me, can I ask a question?” Feb. 20, by Jimmy Greenfield). As for my policy regarding beggars, I avoid carrying cash or loose change whenever I can, which isn’t difficult since I’m a near-broke college student. When I have money in my pocket and I’m downtown, though, sometimes I’ll buy a beggar food or hot chocolate or coffee, but I rarely, if ever, give them change. I just can’t be sure that they’ll use my money to buy food, and I don’t want them to spend it on booze or cigarettes.
