PlayStation 3 is moving from idea to reality.

Early buzz is that the game console, due in two years, has the muscle of 100 personal computers and will include a component that lets gamers record TV TiVo-style.

That’s according to the San Jose Mercury News, which says that PlayStation manufacturer Sony’s secret lies in its ability to develop microchips that pack a high-powered computer network’s punch into a single machine.

The hurdles are many, including how to program games for a system that can perform so many tasks at once. But Sony thinks PS3 will duplicate the success of its predecessor–and may even replace the traditional family home entertainment center.
