– Amtrak plans to maintain service between Chicago and Toronto and Chicago and Grand Rapids, Mich., for 45 days past the March 31 expiration of its agreement with the state, according to Michigan State Rep. Lauren Hager (R-Port Huron). Ongoing efforts by lawmakers and state officials to work out an agreement with Amtrak prompted the move. Amtrak says it needs $7.1 million a year to continue the two routes, but state funding is capped at $5.7 million. Amtrak’s third line in the state, which runs from Chicago to Pontiac, is not involved because it’s not subsidized by state dollars.
