Top-seeded Serena Williams and third seed Kim Clijsters advanced to the semifinals of the Nasdaq-100 Open on Tuesday in Key Biscayne, Fla.
Williams beat Marion Bartol 6-1, 6-2 and Clijsters defeated Jelena Dokic 6-2, 6-0. On Monday night, Williams’ sister Venus was upset 7-6 (2), 6-1 by Megan Shaughnessy.
On the men’s side, second seed Andre Agassi beat Mark Philippoussis 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Todd Martin, 32, reached the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Radek Stepanek.
Former No. 1 Marcelo Rios pulled out with a back injury, his second withdrawal at Key Biscayne in two years.
– Shaughnessy and Alexandra Stevenson will join Serena and Venus Williams on the U.S. team April 26-27 in the first round of the Fed Cup against the Czech Republic in Lowell, Mass.
