Spring is a feverish season for dance, a time when the offerings are plentiful and the scheduling hectic.
For those who want advice on how to organize their dance card, here are four of the season’s best partners:
DANCE NO. 1
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, through April 13 at the Oriental Theatre; 312-902-1400.
The beloved troupe celebrates its 25th anniversary with an assortment of new works and old favorites, including the company premiere of renowned choreographer Jiri Kylian’s “No More Play.”
DANCE NO. 2
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, April 2-6 at the Auditorium Theatre; 312-902-1500.
The popular troupe returns with classics, including Elisa Monte’s “Treading” to music by Steve Reich, and new works including “Swing” dancemaker Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s “Prayers From the Edge,” inspired by her tour with the company through the Middle East following the Six Day War.
DANCE NO. 3:
Chicago Moving Company, April 4-5, Harold Washington Library Theater; 773-880-5402.
This important local company turns 30 and offers Nana Shineflug’s new “April,” set to Indian raga, and Cindy Brandle’s “Uncertainties of Life” to Gyorgy Ligeti’s cello music.
DANCE NO. 4:
The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, April 23-27, Auditorium; 312-902-1500.
Artistic director and co-founder Gerald Arpino
premieres his first work in five years, “I/DNA,”
inspired by the Illinois death penalty
controversy.
