Electromagnetism and the mysteries of the Earth’s core are fascinating subjects, but “The Core” turns them into pseudo-sci-fi nonsense. This elaborate misfire–which misuses an unusually good cast (Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Delroy Lindo and Stanley Tucci)–is an end-of-the-world movie about a group of scientists drilling to the center of the earth in order to restart the planet’s mysteriously dormant core. It’s a preposterous idea for a movie. Even though director Jon Amiel and company try to play it for laughs, they don’t pull it off. PG-13.
