Two officials at Elgin-based Unit School District 46 said they will try to start a charter school aimed at helping at-risk and disadvantaged children.
Calvin Gooch, principal of Sheridan Elementary School in Elgin, and his wife, U-46 administrator Gail Worrell, said Tuesday they hope to open the Chicagoland Science, Art & Language Institute as early as the fall.
The charter school would accommodate up to 900 kindergartners through 8th graders.
District staff members are reviewing the proposal for the non-profit public school.
The state has 22 charter schools, 14 in Chicago. The proposed school would be the first charter school in U-46.
