A Mundelein teenager charged with bludgeoning his girlfriend’s father and stepmother with a hammer because they would not let him date her was ordered held Tuesday in lieu of $2 million bond.
Jonathan McMeekin, 17, of the 1000 block of Orchard Street allegedly gave investigators a detailed statement and led them to a river near the couple’s home in Lincolnshire, where authorities recovered a hammer and McMeekin’s bloody clothes from the water, police said.
Rick Rogers, 49, and Angela Gloria, 36, were found on the bed in the master bedroom of their townhouse in the 200 block of Westminster Way around 5 a.m. Monday after the girl called police from a cellphone, authorities said.
Rogers had been struck at least six times on the head and chest, and Gloria had been hit twice on the head and chest, authorities said.
Rogers was in critical condition Tuesday at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, and Gloria was in fair condition, a hospital spokesman said.
During a bond hearing Tuesday, a prosecutor said McMeekin accused Rogers’ ex-wife–the 14-year-old girl’s mother–of being involved, allegedly telling McMeekin she wanted the couple out of the way.
Prosecutors, however, offered no evidence that the woman was involved.
According to Assistant State’s Atty. Matthew Chancey, McMeekin told them the woman said, “If they were out of the picture, she could get her daughter back and he, the defendant, could get his girlfriend back.
“He asked her, ‘Do you want me to do something about it?’ She said yes and gave him the keys to her car,” Chancey told Circuit Judge Victoria Martin. Mc-Meekin allegedly told police he drove the woman’s car to the townhouse.
Waller said his office had to tell the judge about the accusation against the ex-wife because it was part of McMeekin’s statement to police.
“At the bond hearing, we need to present the evidence we have, and this is what the defendant told the police,” Waller said.
Attempts to reach the woman for comment were unsuccessful.
