Statistics are a great part of baseball but sometimes can be manipulated to prove a point for just about any argument. I would think most Cubs fans would expect more out of “season ticket-holder” Stephen Nidetz.

If the Cubs could have pulled out Kerry Wood’s last five starts, he would be 9-2 right now–end of argument. His strikeouts-to-walks ratio is greater than 2 to 1 (89-34), with an ERA under 3.00. Sure, he has his control problems, but some would say his high hit-batsman total actually helps him–ask Roger Clemens.

At a time when Cubs fans see their team in first place, to think of moving one of their top starting pitchers and replacing him with an unproven Juan Cruz or a minor-leaguer does “call for heads to be examined.”
