Teachers went back to work Thursday after a monthlong strike that grew to include protests by farmers and government workers and led President Alejandro Toledo to impose emergency measures.

Teachers signed an accord with the government a week ago, but had to hold national meetings to approve the deal.

They announced Wednesday that they were ending the strike.

The government offered a $30-per-month raise to public school teachers, who on average earn less than $200 a month. The educators had been seeking twice that much. The protests also saw farmers demand protection from cheap imported produce.
