The U.S. Navy is considering moving its Pacific Fleet reconnaissance headquarters from Hawaii to Japan because of North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, a Japanese daily said Saturday.

The Mainichi Shimbun, citing U.S. and Japanese sources, said the planned move was part of Washington’s transformation of its military presence worldwide and was aimed at making the base the center of intelligence in Asia.

The move to the Misawa base in northern Aomori prefecture, already used by the U.S. military, could take place by this fall, the paper added.

The base would be in charge of gathering information on North Korea’s ballistic missile program and collecting data on submarines in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the Mainichi said.
