As the parent of a child who succumbed to brain cancer and the older sibling of a young brother who died from leukemia, I applaud the commentary piece detailing the prevalence of childhood cancers and their potential causes. For the past several years, I, along with scores of other parents of children with cancer, have unsuccessfully lobbied state and federal legislators for the creation of a Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September. We support the parents’ right to access of information about ongoing clinical trials and potential biohazards, the training of pediatricians regarding the unique warning signs of cancer in children and the accurate reporting of cancer deaths in children.

Our state and nation have months dedicated to many worthy causes. Surely our children, who have no political voice, deserve the same respect and consideration.
