Waukegan Road in McHenry will become a speedway Saturday as racers rev up for the Kiwanis All-American Soap Box Derby for daredevils ages 8 to 17.
“The cars hit 25 to 28 m.p.h., which is pretty fast when you’re sitting on a piece of wood about 4 inches off the ground,” said organizer Jim Marinangel.
The race will start at 9 a.m. near Landmark Elementary School and finish near the McHenry East Campus High School parking lot. The winner will advance to the world championship in Akron, Ohio.
