Steve Chapman’s column “Embracing age-old monogamy” (Commentary, June 22) was right on in its assessment of the conservative movement’s anti-gay marriage stance.

But what I find more disheartening is how the liberal politicians in this country have all shied away from taking a stand on the fact that to deny homosexuals the rights that come with legal marriage is nothing short of bigotry.

I have more respect for a conservative who sticks to his guns than a liberal who backs down from what his party really stands for in the name of getting elected.
