The Toronto Maple Leafs signed free-agent defenseman Bryan Marchment to a one-year, $2 million contract.

Marchment had three assists in 14 games with the Colorado Avalanche, which acquired him from San Jose late last season. Marchment had two goals and nine assists in 67 games with the Sharks.

The 34-year-old has collected 2,126 penalty minutes in 814 career games.

– New Jersey Devils defenseman Ken Daneyko retired Friday, ending an 18-year NHL career that included three Stanley Cup titles in the last nine years.

Daneyko’s 1,283 games with the Devils ranks fourth in the NHL for games played with the same organization.

Daneyko finishes his career with 36 goals and 142 assists. He had five goals and 17 assists in 175 career playoff games.

– The Montreal Canadiens signed Russian forward Alexander Perezhogin to a three-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not released. Perezhogin, 19, was selected 25th overall in the 2001 draft. In 48 games with Omsk of the Russian league last season, he had 15 goals and six assists. He also helped Russia win the gold medal at the world junior championships.
