The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a preliminary investigation into the Nissan Xterra sport-utility vehicle. The probe, the first step toward a possible recall, is examining whether the brakes generate heat that make them prone to warping. NHTSA received one complaint. The action affects 2001-2003 models of the Xterra, covering as many as 300,000 vehicles.

NHTSA has also opened a preliminary investigation into the 2002 and 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX after receiving 45 complaints of loss of braking power on uneven terrain. The probe affects about 20,000 vehicles.
