As NFL training camps open, a look at the five teams that are facing the biggest quarterback battles:
1) Browns
Tim Couch vs. Kelly Holcomb
Coming off a 429-yard, three-touchdown playoff game against the Steelers, Holcomb has the steadier hand, which puts this young team in better position to win. Coach Butch Davis will go with the best man, regardless of salary. That probably means Couch will sit.
2) Cowboys
Chad Hutchinson vs. Quincy Carter
Carter may be more motivated to put his natural skills on display for a new staff, but Hutchinson’s drive will help him win the job.
3) Jaguars
Mark Brunell vs. Byron Leftwich
Brunell is one of the team’s leaders. He’s smart, aggressive and tough but is showing lots of wear and tear for his age (32). Brunell will start, but Leftwich will play.
4) Ravens
Chris Redman vs. Kyle Boller
If Boller were battling a seasoned veteran, his challenge would be much harder. But his natural tools will take over and help him overtake Redman.
5) Panthers
Rodney Peete vs. Jake Delhomme
Delhomme’s strengths are similar to Peete’s, but Delhomme has age (28 vs. 37) and potential on his side.
