A former U.S. Postal Service letter carrier pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to stealing nearly 3,700 pieces of first-class mail, rifling their contents and pocketing about $9,600.
Robert L. Johnson, 39, who was assigned to the Calumet City post office, admitted stealing a key that allowed him to open collection boxes.
He stole mail from collection boxes in Calumet City every day over a three-month period in 2002 and 2003.
Johnson’s lawyer, Donald Young, said his client stole the letters to find cash for a drug habit. Johnson faces up to 16 months in prison.
