A program in which high school dropouts will build affordable housing while they earn a general equivalency diploma hasn’t started in Waukegan, but there’s a backlog of people waiting to join.
“This community needs this type of program,” said Maria Velasco, 28, program director for Waukegan YouthBuild and a high school dropout who is working toward her master’s degree in clinical psychology.
YouthBuild is a non-profit organization that combines construction experience with alternative education for more than 6,000 at-risk young adults at more than 200 local programs nationwide.
An inauguration ceremony for Waukegan’s program is planned for Monday.
WHEN: 9 a.m. WHERE: 3246 W. Monroe St., Waukegan.
