  • Going to Oakbrook Shopping Center from Chicago but don’t want to pay the toll? Take the Interstate Highway 294 south exit and go west on Roosevelt Road. Head south on Illinois Highway 83 to the shopping center.
  • Bypass the mess on Golf Road by the Woodfield mall (and get more easily to other shopping) by discovering McConnor Parkway. After exiting at Higgins from northbound Illinois Highway 53, stay on the frontage road until you hit Golf. Turn left onto Golf but immediately get into the right lane for a quick right turn onto McConnor. Ikea and Black Ram restaurant are on McConnor. Follow McConnor west and you’ll hit Meacham. Turn left onto Meacham and you’ll soon see the Woodfield Village Green, Marshall Field’s Home Store, The Great Indoors and other non-mall shopping and dining around Meacham and Golf.
  • If Interstate Highway 80 is backed up between Orland Park and Joliet, take U.S. Highway 6.
  • If Interstate Highway 290 west is backed up going into the merge with Interstate Highway 355 into Illinois 53, try taking Illinois 83 all the way north and cutting over on Irving Park Road. Avoid Thorndale Avenue heading west to get to 53 — truck drivers seem to love that road.
  • If you’re going to O’Hare’s international terminal and see signs for Bessie Coleman Drive, take it. It’s the easiest and quickest way to get to there.
  • When Illinois 53 is backed up through the Elk Grove Village/Schaumburg area, consider taking Rohlwing Road instead.
