In a July 25 letter, Jason Vines, president of the Sport Utility Vehicle Owners of America, claims that SUVs provide the carrying capacity of station wagons and are, therefore, a logical replacement. When I was growing up, we had a small wagon that got very good gas mileage and didn’t pose a gargantuan threat to other drivers. It had enough carrying capacity to take my family of four, two cats, a dog, a lizard and enough gear for two months in the mountains on a 15-hour drive. SUVs simply represent another chapter in our American romance with excess.
