A market making bets on future political events is hardly an absurd or contemptible idea (“Federal Bureau of Astonishment,” by Joe Knowles, July 31). I believe the Pentagon was correct that it would yield useful information.

Case in point: Look at how the buyers of airline stock put contracts anticipated the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Enough said.
