You reported that the head size of children with autism get bigger after birth (“Rapid change in infants’ head size linked to autism,” News, July 16), but your story gave a confused message. First you said it’s just the genes; then you said the genes probably interact with environment (which genes always do).

Right now nobody knows why these children experience an accelerated increase in head size.

But it’s too early to rule out environmental factors, particularly since the brain growth occurs after birth.

Let’s keep our minds open about this; the brains of too many children are at stake.
